Apple has introduced end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging for iPhone users, allowing secure conversations with Android users through the Messages app. This feature is part of the iOS 26.5 update, released on Monday, which includes beta support for encrypted RCS chats. With this enhancement, neither Apple nor Google can access the content of messages during transmission.
How Encryption Works in iOS 26.5
When users engage in an encrypted RCS conversation with an Android contact, a lock icon and the word "Encrypted" will appear at the top of the chat interface. This visual indicator confirms that the communication is secure, provided the carrier supports the feature. Apple has stated that encryption will be enabled by default and will gradually be applied to both new and existing RCS conversations. Android users must also have the latest version of Google Messages installed to participate in encrypted chats.
Additional Features in iOS 26.5
Beyond encrypted messaging, iOS 26.5 introduces new wallpapers and integrates ads into the Maps application. Users may see local advertisements based on their approximate location, search terms, or map view while using the app. Apple assures that advertising data is not linked to the user's Apple account. Alongside iOS 26.5, Apple released updates for iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 on the same day.
Apple began testing encrypted RCS chats with Android users earlier this year, and the beta rollout marks a significant step toward cross-platform messaging security. The update aims to enhance user privacy by ensuring that messages remain confidential during transit.
