Cyberbullying Among Students: A Growing Digital Menace

Cyberbullying: A Pervasive Threat in the Digital Age

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw attention to the growing menace of cyberbullying among students, a problem that has become increasingly prevalent in the digital age. With the widespread use of smartphones, social media, and online communication, students are now vulnerable to harassment beyond the boundaries of schools and colleges. Studies indicate that a significant proportion of young people have experienced cyberbullying, including abusive messages, public humiliation, online exclusion, rumour-spreading, and the unauthorised sharing of personal photographs and videos.

Devastating Consequences on Mental Health and Academics

The consequences can be devastating. Victims often suffer from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, social isolation, and emotional distress. Cyberbullying can also affect academic performance, concentration, and school attendance. In severe cases, prolonged online harassment may even lead to self-harm or suicidal thoughts. One of the most concerning aspects of cyberbullying is that many incidents go unreported. Students often remain silent out of fear, embarrassment, or concern that reporting the abuse may make matters worse. As a result, perpetrators frequently escape accountability.

Need for Comprehensive Safety Measures

Schools should implement comprehensive digital safety programmes, establish confidential reporting mechanisms, and educate students about responsible online behaviour. Parents must also remain actively involved in their children’s digital lives, while authorities should strengthen cybercrime enforcement and ensure that victims receive appropriate support and protection. Cyberbullying is not harmless online behaviour; it is a serious social problem that demands urgent attention. Protecting students in digital spaces is just as important as protecting them in physical environments.
