An unexpected source may have revealed an early look at the Google Pixel Watch 5. Randy Pitchford, the creator of the Borderlands video game franchise, shared two images of a watch on X (formerly Twitter), claiming a friend discovered it underwater while scuba diving near Saint Martin. The post, reported earlier by Kotaku, suggests the device is a Google Pixel 5, a model not yet announced or released.
Details of the Discovery
Pitchford wrote that the watch appears to be in working condition, with the display showing the correct time despite an empty battery. He stated, "The reverse of the watch indicates that it is a Google Pixel 5, which has not yet been announced, let alone released." After seeking the owner, Pitchford confirmed someone contacted him and arrangements for its return have been made. Google did not respond to requests for comment from The Verge.
Specs and Context
Details about the Pixel Watch 5 remain scarce, though previous rumors indicated it might feature Google's in-house Tensor processor. This incident echoes the leak of the first Pixel Watch in 2022, when images appeared on Reddit claiming a bartender found it at a restaurant. Similarly, the iPhone 4's 2010 leak comes to mind. Google typically unveils new Pixel devices in August, so confirmation of whether a prototype was truly lost at sea may come within months.
