Rivian has reported its first quarter earnings for 2026, offering a detailed look at the company's financial health as it begins production of the pivotal R2 electric vehicle. The company's production and delivery figures for the first three months of the year were already known. Rivian sold 10,365 vehicles in Q1, a 20 percent increase year over year. It manufactured 10,236 vehicles at its Normal, Illinois factory, marking a 30 percent rise compared to the same period last year. The company reiterated its forecast of selling between 62,000 and 67,000 vehicles in 2026.
Revenue and Financial Performance
In terms of earnings, Rivian generated $1.38 billion in revenue, an 11.3 percent increase from $1.24 billion in Q1 2025. Automotive revenue accounted for $908 million, a 1.5 percent decline year over year. However, software and subscription services revenue surged to $473 million, a remarkable 48.7 percent increase. As electric vehicle sales slow, Rivian is focusing on monetizing its digital offerings, including the newly launched Autonomy Plus package.
Gross profits stood at $119 million, a 42 percent decrease year over year. Automotive profits posted a loss of $62 million, compared to a $92 million gross profit in Q1 2025, primarily due to a $100 million drop in sales of automotive regulatory credits and lower production volumes.
R2 Vehicle and Future Outlook
Rivian is banking on the more affordable R2 midsize SUV to boost sales, especially after the elimination of the federal $7,500 EV tax credit. The R2 is crucial for the company's future as it invests heavily in a new factory and autonomous driving projects. A timely launch, with the first R2s expected to reach customers in June, is considered vital. Rivian achieved its first-ever gross profit in 2025 by cutting costs and maintains that it will achieve positive gross profit margins by the end of 2026. The company aims to sell over 20,000 R2 vehicles by year-end, despite a tornado damaging a portion of its Normal factory earlier this month.
Rivian has been busy recently. It plans to design its own AI chips and add lidar sensors to future R2 models for fully autonomous driving. The R2 rollout will begin with higher-priced variants up to $57,000 for the performance version, while the base model starting at $45,000 will not arrive until late 2027.
Partnerships and Investments
Rivian reached a major milestone in its software joint venture with Volkswagen, unlocking an additional $1 billion investment. VW has committed up to $5.8 billion in Rivian if certain goals are met. The joint venture is developing a next-generation software platform based on Rivian's zonal architecture, which will be used in VW brands like Audi, Scout, and Porsche.
Additionally, Rivian secured a significant deal with Uber to supply tens of thousands of R2 vehicles for use as robotaxis. Uber will invest $1.25 billion as part of the agreement, starting with $300 million at signing.
