Matt Damon has described Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey as the most physically demanding film of his career, revealing the Oscar-winning director warned him from the outset that the production would push him further than any of his previous roles.
Nolan's Warning Proved True
Speaking about the gruelling shoot, Damon recalled one of his earliest conversations with Nolan before filming began. "He was like, 'This movie's gonna be hard.' And I looked at him like, 'I've made, I don't know, 80 movies.' And he goes, 'No. This movie's gonna be really hard.' He, to his credit, was not lying."
The 55-year-old actor, who stars as the legendary Greek hero Odysseus, said the production demanded far more than simply getting into shape. Filming took place across six countries, often in harsh outdoor conditions, with Nolan insisting on practical effects and real locations rather than relying heavily on visual effects.
Grueling Conditions on Set
Damon explained that the cast regularly endured freezing temperatures, rough seas and long days on location, with sleep becoming a luxury during production. "We called it the 'Odyssey Five'," he joked, referring to the roughly five hours of sleep the cast often managed between filming days.
Preparing to play Odysseus also required a dramatic physical transformation. Damon adopted a strict training programme and completely overhauled his diet, cutting out gluten and slimming down to around 167 pounds, the lightest he has been since high school. He said the preparation amounted to "a complete lifestyle change," noting that every meal, workout and night's sleep became part of the job.
No Special Treatment for the Lead
Despite leading the film, Damon previously revealed he received no special treatment during the demanding shoot. "If you're out on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you get caught in a storm, you get wet with everybody else," he said, adding that Nolan endured the same difficult conditions as the cast and crew.
The actor said the shared hardships created an unusually close bond among everyone involved in the production. "I do feel really bonded with everybody who was on that movie, cast and crew, because it was so challenging for everyone."
About 'The Odyssey'
The Odyssey marks Nolan's follow-up to his Oscar-winning Oppenheimer and is the first feature film shot entirely using IMAX cameras. Based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, the film follows Odysseus' perilous journey home after the Trojan War and features an ensemble cast including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o and Charlize Theron.
The Odyssey is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on July 17, 2026, with early box office projections suggesting it could become one of Christopher Nolan's biggest commercial successes to date.
