Government Announces Digital Platform to Empower Pakistani SMEs in Global Markets
In a significant move to bolster Pakistan's economic landscape, the government is developing a dedicated digital platform aimed at enabling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to showcase their products to a worldwide audience. This initiative seeks to promote Pakistani enterprises and integrate them into the rapidly expanding global e-commerce ecosystem, fostering growth and competitiveness.
High-Level Meeting Reviews Digital Transformation for SMEs
A high-level meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Haroon Akhtar Khan, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production, to assess strategies for strengthening Pakistan's SME sector through digital transformation. The meeting included key stakeholders such as Secretary Industries and Production Saif Anjum, CEO of SMEDA Ms. Nadia J. Seth, and members of the SMEDA Board, highlighting a collaborative approach to this national effort.
During the discussions, Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasized that digitalization is crucial for enhancing the digital presence of SMEs and expanding their access to markets. He stated, "Digital platforms provide SMEs with a unique opportunity to export their products to international markets and connect with global buyers, thereby driving economic growth."
Comprehensive Platform Modeled on Global Leaders
Under the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the platform will be developed to serve not only SMEs but also the gems and jewellery sector and the automobile sector, aiming to enhance their global outreach. The new platform will be designed according to the standards of leading global models such as Alibaba, AliExpress, and Amazon, ensuring it meets international-level functionality and accessibility requirements.
Key features of the platform will include:
- Showcasing value-added and high-quality products manufactured in Pakistan.
- Providing a centralized portal for global buyers to explore and purchase Pakistani goods.
- Facilitating seamless transactions and market connections for SMEs.
To operationalize this vision, a working group has been established on the directions of Haroon Akhtar Khan. This group will develop a practical roadmap for the platform's launch, ensuring timely implementation and effectiveness.
Tax Relief and Economic Measures in Upcoming Budget
In related developments, Haroon Akhtar Khan announced that tax relief measures will be introduced in the upcoming federal budget to support businesses and the public. He noted that budget proposals are being sought from all stakeholders to ensure inclusive economic planning, addressing the significant challenges Pakistan faces due to regional conflicts and a heavy tax burden.
Haroon Akhtar Khan further stated, "Once the prevailing war-like situation subsides, the government will introduce relief packages and incentives for the public." He expressed confidence that the government's decisions, coupled with the tireless efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, will help improve the current economic situation and prevent loss of hope among the populace.
Engagement with Business Communities
These remarks were made during a meeting between Haroon Akhtar Khan and the president of the Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where discussions focused on federal budget proposals, Pakistan's economic situation, and taxation-related matters. The Ministry of Industries and Production will finalize budget proposals after consultation with all relevant stakeholders, ensuring a comprehensive approach.
On the occasion, the president of the Gujranwala Chamber extended an invitation to Haroon Akhtar Khan to attend the Gujranwala Expo 2026, scheduled to be held at the Karachi Expo Centre, underscoring ongoing collaboration between the government and business sectors.
