The Punjab government has introduced a QR-based Panic Button system aimed at enhancing passenger safety and strengthening emergency response across the province's public transport network. This initiative was launched by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz's Digital Punjab program.
System Implementation and Coverage
According to officials, QR Panic Buttons will be installed in buses, vans, rickshaws, taxis, and other public transport vehicles throughout Punjab. The system has been developed in-house without imposing any additional financial burden on the government. Passengers can access the service free of charge through the Public Safety App and the PSCA platform.
Safety Features Offered
The QR Panic Button provides 12 safety features, including emergency calling, video calling, live chat, location sharing, vehicle verification, and instant police assistance. By scanning the QR code at the start of a journey, passengers can view verified details of the vehicle, driver, and owner, and share this information with family members or trusted contacts.
In emergency situations, passengers can contact authorities via calls, video calls, or live chat. The system automatically shares the passenger's live location and vehicle details with the Safe Cities control room, enabling a swift response through the command-and-control network. Drivers can also use the system to seek immediate assistance when required.
Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Karim stated that safeguarding citizens' lives and property remains the police force's top priority, adding that the QR Panic Button will strengthen coordination between law enforcement agencies and the public.
