Dua Lipa and Callum Turner's three-day wedding celebrations in Sicily sparked protests from residents in Palermo after public squares, roads, and other areas of the city were restricted for the private event. The couple legally married in London on May 31 before traveling to Italy for a larger celebration reportedly attended by around 300 guests. Reports estimate the cost of the wedding festivities at approximately £1.5 million.
Public Space Restrictions
As part of the celebrations, two major public squares were closed, several roads were blocked, and drone flights were banned in parts of Palermo. The restrictions prompted criticism from local residents, activists, and business owners who argued that public spaces had been made inaccessible for a private event. Social justice group Apro Palermo led opposition to the closures by displaying posters across the city bearing slogans including "Palermo is not for rent," "Our square is not your living room," and "Public spaces belong to everyone." According to reports, after some posters were removed, protesters spray-painted the same messages onto walls around the city.
Local Business Frustration
Several local business owners also expressed frustration over the disruption. One business owner told The Guardian, "For three days we've been forced to park miles away and walk to work. I could understand if it was for the pope, but not for a singer." Clothing shop owner Maria Aiello also questioned the impact on local traders, saying, "I like Dua Lipa but what will we get out of all this disruption? It's not as if she's going to come and buy anything from my shop."
Non-Disclosure Agreements and Compensation
Reports further claimed that some residents living near wedding venues were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements. One resident told the Daily Mail, "We can't say anything. Our lips are sealed." According to reports, compensation was offered to some affected residents and businesses. Residents overlooking areas used for additional wedding parking reportedly received payments of around £5,000, while businesses affected by closures were offered similar sums for disruption and lost trade. The couple also reportedly paid £10,000 to rent Piazza Croce and spent an additional €10,000 on private security during the celebrations.

Wedding events were held at Palazzo Valguarnera Gangi and Villa Valguarnera in Bagheria, with guests including Elton John, Charli XCX, Mark Ronson, Troye Sivan, and Donatella Versace.
