Acting President of the Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industry (HCSTSI), Ahmed Idrees Chohan, on Thursday emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive and coordinated safety measures in view of the National Disaster Management Authority's (NDMA) monsoon forecast. Chohan highlighted that Hyderabad has faced severe problems during monsoon rains in recent years due to inadequate drainage, leading to stagnant water in industrial areas, commercial centers, and residential zones.
Impact on Business and Supply Chains
Chohan noted that waterlogging disrupts business activities, industrial production, and supply chains, causing huge losses. In response, the HCSTSI has sent a detailed letter to the Chief Secretary of Sindh, requesting immediate instructions to the Hyderabad Water and Sewerage Corporation and other relevant institutions to ensure all pumping stations, machinery, generators, electrical systems, and emergency equipment are fully functional.
Cleaning and Desilting Required
The chamber also urged that cleaning and desilting of storm drains, sewer lines, large drains, drainage wells, collection wells, and related structures be completed on an emergency basis to restore their original capacity and enable effective rainwater drainage. Chohan appealed to the Chief Secretary to prioritize this matter, monitor departmental performance, and issue orders for timely, actionable measures.
He assured that the HCSTSI will continue cooperating with the government and institutions for public interest, industry, trade, and civil security. The press release was issued on Thursday.
