Heavy Rain, Hailstorms Damage Crops and Orchards in Shangla

Shangla experienced heavy rainfall for a second consecutive day on Thursday, bringing much-needed relief from an intense heatwave but causing significant damage to orchards, crops, and seasonal vegetables due to widespread hailstorms. According to local sources, district headquarters Alpurai and adjoining areas received heavy downpours throughout the day, while intermittent rain was recorded in both upper and lower parts of the district. The rainfall, accompanied by cool winds, led to a sharp drop in temperatures after several days of extreme heat and humidity.

Farmers Report Substantial Losses

While residents welcomed the change in weather, farmers reported substantial losses as hailstorms struck several parts of the district. Fruit-bearing trees, including apple, apricot, and peach orchards, suffered damage when hailstones hit developing fruit and blossoms. Standing crops, particularly maize, vegetables, and other seasonal produce, were also affected, raising concerns among growers about the impact on agricultural output and household incomes during the current season. Farmers urged the relevant authorities to conduct an immediate assessment of the losses and provide compensation to affected growers. They said many families in Shangla rely heavily on agriculture and fruit production for their livelihoods and would struggle to absorb the financial impact of the damage.

Landslides and Water Accumulation

The rain also caused water accumulation in some low-lying areas, while minor landslides and the movement of mud and stones onto link roads were reported at several locations. However, no major road blockages occurred, and traffic remained largely uninterrupted. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast further rainfall in Shangla and adjoining mountainous regions over the coming days. The department advised residents to exercise caution during periods of heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, particularly in landslide-prone areas.

Improved Water Availability

Despite the damage to crops, the rainfall has improved water availability across the district. Residents reported increased flows in natural springs, streams, and waterfalls, offering relief to communities that had been facing water shortages during the recent dry spell. Environmental observers said the rainfall was also expected to benefit forests, natural vegetation, and groundwater recharge across the region. Meanwhile, clouds, mist, and rain-washed mountains transformed much of Shangla’s landscape, as cooler conditions prevailed across the district following the prolonged spell of hot weather.
