On the directives of Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Food Dr Muhammad Israr Khan, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority has launched a province-wide crackdown against substandard and adulterated milk. The operation has resulted in the destruction of thousands of litres of contaminated milk, the imposition of heavy fines, and the initiation of legal proceedings under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Act.
Early Morning Inspections and Seizures
According to a spokesperson for the Authority, food safety teams carried out early morning inspections at the Rashakai Interchange in Mardan, where milk supply vehicles were stopped and samples were tested on the spot using the Mobile Food Testing Laboratory. During the operation, a tanker carrying 3,500 litres of chemically adulterated milk was seized and destroyed.
Operations in Peshawar, Charsadda, and Haripur
In a separate operation in Peshawar, food safety teams intercepted a vehicle carrying 40 litres of water-adulterated milk, which was discarded on the spot. The teams also confiscated 300 kilograms of mislabelled ice cream during the inspection. In Charsadda, food safety officials imposed fines after detecting water adulteration in milk and disposed of 30 litres of substandard milk. Additionally, 150 kilograms or litres of ice cream were seized from a vehicle and destroyed for violating food safety regulations. Meanwhile, in Haripur, food safety teams established checkpoints at the city’s entry and exit points to inspect milk supply vehicles. During the operation, 150 litres of adulterated milk were seized and destroyed, while legal action was initiated against the violators along with the imposition of heavy fines.
Government Commitment to Public Health
Commending the successful operations, Dr Israr appreciated the performance of the Food Safety Authority and reaffirmed that indiscriminate action against the adulteration mafia and those involved in the sale of substandard food would continue. He emphasized that there would be no compromise on public health and that ensuring the availability of safe and quality food remains a top priority of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government. He added that strict enforcement of food safety laws would continue across the province.
