Lahore Police Deploy 11,000 for Muharram Security

The Lahore Police have rolled out a comprehensive security plan for the 9th of Muharram, deploying more than 11,000 officers and personnel across the city to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of mourners. The measures were announced by Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana in a statement detailing the extensive arrangements.

Deployment and Coverage

According to CCPO Kamyana, security has been arranged for 386 majalis (religious gatherings) and 81 mourning processions. The force includes officers from various units, with a focus on strict implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Punjab government. Section 144 restrictions are also being enforced to prevent any untoward incidents.

Restrictions and Bans

A complete ban on pillion riding on motorcycles will remain in effect on both the 9th and 10th of Muharram. The Loudspeaker Act is being strictly monitored, and shops and markets along procession routes will remain closed. Standing on rooftops of buildings and shops surrounding the processions is prohibited. Organizers and participants must adhere to designated timings and approved routes for all majalis and processions.

Security Layers and Technology

Kamyana stated that mourners are being provided with a robust four-tier security cover, supported by walk-through gates, metal detectors, and other modern security equipment. In coordination with procession and majalis organizers, the screening and checking process for participants has been further strengthened. Processions and majalis are being monitored around the clock through live digital surveillance by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and other monitoring centers.

Coordination and Patrols

Divisional SPs have been directed to maintain close coordination with peace committee members and procession organizers. Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU), and Elite Force teams continue patrols around majalis and procession routes to ensure rapid response if needed.

Appeal to Citizens

The CCPO urged citizens not to pay attention to rumors or fake news and to remain vigilant against miscreants while promoting unity and harmony within the community. The police emphasized that all measures are aimed at ensuring a peaceful observance of Muharram.
