The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, windstorms and thunderstorms in Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday, while most other parts of the country are expected to experience hot and dry weather.
Heavy Rainfall and Landslide Warnings
The Met Office warned that heavy rainfall during Thursday night could trigger landslides in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir. It also cautioned that local streams and nullahs may overflow, increasing the risk of flash floods. According to the PMD, hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and local nullahs in northeastern Balochistan may also witness flash flooding.
Urban Flooding and Infrastructure Risks
The department further warned of possible urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Nowshera, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad during the forecast period. The Met Office also cautioned that strong winds and lightning could damage vulnerable infrastructure, including solar panels, electricity poles and billboards.
Regional Forecast Details
In Islamabad, hot weather is expected during the daytime, while rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms is likely during the morning and night. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain, windstorms and thunderstorms are expected in Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Chitral, Battagram, Buner, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Malakand, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Peshawar, Hangu, Kurram and Waziristan. Most other districts are likely to remain hot and dry.
Punjab is also expected to receive rain in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Khushab, Lahore, Okara, Kasur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot and Narowal. Meanwhile, Bhakkar, Layyah, Mianwali and Dera Ghazi Khan may experience rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms during the evening and night, while the rest of the province is expected to remain hot and dry.
In Sindh, weather conditions are likely to stay very hot and humid, although coastal areas may remain partly cloudy. The PMD has forecast rain with strong winds and thunderstorms in Shahdadkot, Dadu, Sukkur and Jacobabad during the evening and night.
Most parts of Balochistan are expected to remain very hot and dry. However, Zhob, Sherani, Naseerabad, Sibi, Musakhel, Barkhan and Khuzdar are likely to receive rain, windstorms and thunderstorms later in the day.
Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to witness partly cloudy weather with rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms, while isolated heavy rainfall is also likely in Kashmir.
Recent Rainfall and Temperature Records
The PMD said rain, windstorms and thunderstorms, including isolated heavy showers, were recorded across Punjab, Islamabad, Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan during the past 24 hours. The rest of the country experienced hot and humid weather.
According to the department, Murree received the highest rainfall at 72 millimetres, followed by Islamabad Airport (48mm), Golra (39mm) and Lahore's Nishtar Town (38mm). The highest maximum temperature recorded on Thursday was 46°C in Dalbandin, followed by 45°C in Nokkundi, while Sibbi and Dadu each recorded 44°C.
