On the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called upon all stakeholders to collaboratively protect and restore Pakistan's rangelands and natural ecosystems.
Leaders Emphasize Importance of Rangelands
In their separate messages, both leaders underscored that Pakistan's vast rangelands are vital for supporting livestock-based livelihoods and sustaining the rural economy. President Zardari stressed that, as one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, Pakistan must prioritize sustainable management and rehabilitation of degraded lands to ensure environmental stability, economic growth, and social well-being.
Zarkhaiz Scheme to Boost Agriculture
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that under the “Zarkhaiz Scheme,” interest-free and easy loans are being provided to farmers to help improve agricultural productivity and strengthen the farming sector. Both leaders reaffirmed the need for coordinated efforts to combat desertification and mitigate the impacts of drought across the country.
Call for Unified Action
The president and prime minister urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society, and local communities, to work together in restoring degraded lands and promoting sustainable land management practices. They emphasized that such collaborative efforts are essential for building resilience against climate change and ensuring a sustainable future for Pakistan.
