Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari stated that the provincial government's electric bus initiative has significantly improved the public transport system, with increasing demand from residents across the province. In a statement, she said people from various cities are requesting Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to introduce electric buses in their areas, adding that the government plans to extend the service to all 147 tehsils of Punjab.
Electric Buses Currently Operating Across Punjab
According to the minister, 1,100 electric buses are currently operating across the province, providing millions of passengers with comfortable, affordable and environmentally friendly transportation every day. Azma Bukhari said the provincial government is also moving ahead with the distribution of green tractors and electric bikes, describing the welfare of farmers and youth as a key priority of the chief minister's development agenda.
Youth and Farmer Welfare Initiatives
She added that Maryam Nawaz is placing special emphasis on youth-focused initiatives, which she said has increased public support for the government's development programmes. The information minister also claimed that Punjab leads other provinces in governance, performance and merit-based public service delivery.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The shift to electric buses is part of a broader strategy to reduce urban pollution and combat climate change. By replacing conventional diesel buses, the initiative aims to lower carbon emissions and improve air quality in major cities. The government also plans to expand the fleet and introduce more green transport options.
Azma Bukhari highlighted that the demand for electric buses reflects the public's appreciation for the service's reliability and cost-effectiveness. She reiterated the government's commitment to expanding the service to every tehsil, ensuring that even remote areas benefit from modern, eco-friendly public transport.
