Punjab Police Register 32,000+ Electricity Theft Cases

Punjab Police have registered more than 32,000 cases of electricity theft and arrested over 23,000 suspects across the province so far this year as part of an ongoing crackdown launched on the directions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

Statistics of the Crackdown

According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, 32,181 cases of electricity theft have been registered across Punjab, including Lahore, while 23,439 accused have been arrested during the campaign. The spokesperson said challans have been submitted in 20,268 cases, while courts have convicted 2,521 electricity thieves, awarding them imprisonment and fines.

Focus on Lahore

In Lahore alone, police have registered 8,880 cases of electricity theft and arrested 9,922 suspects during the ongoing operation.

IGP Punjab's Directives

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr Abdul Kareem directed police officers to continue the province-wide crackdown with full force, stressing that priority should be given to taking action against those involved in electricity theft causing losses to the national exchequer. The campaign against power theft is being carried out jointly with the relevant authorities to curb electricity losses and improve recovery across the province.
