Italian police have arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the murder of four Pakistani farm workers whose bodies were discovered in a burnt-out minivan in southern Italy, according to the Corriere della Sera daily on Tuesday.
Details of the Incident
The charred vehicle was found at a petrol station near the village of Amendolara, located in the vast farming area of the Calabria region. CCTV footage from the station captured two individuals blocking the van's doors from the outside and pouring a liquid inside, as reported by Corriere della Sera citing law enforcement sources. The footage then showed a fire erupting, with the two suspects fleeing the scene.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered the bodies inside the minivan. Local police chief Antonio Borelli told Corriere della Sera, “This is definitely murder, we just have to work out the details.”
Rising Tensions Among Migrants
The newspaper noted that there have been 14 cases of arson involving cars and minivans carrying Pakistanis in recent months in the area. Tensions among migrants over the division of farm work, residency papers, and accommodation have been cited as underlying factors.
The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the full circumstances behind the tragic event.
