Harassment on the Rise Across Multiple Spheres
Harassment in Pakistan has become a serious concern for the safety and security of women, with incidents increasing not only in public spaces but also in educational institutions, workplaces, and even homes. Girls who travel daily by public transport frequently face inappropriate touching, unwanted staring, and offensive gestures, making their journeys uncomfortable and unsafe.
Silence Fuels the Problem
Sadly, many victims remain silent because of social stigma, family honour, and fear of public shame. As a result, offenders often escape punishment, encouraging further misconduct. A robbery FIR registered after an eight-day delay highlights the systemic issues in reporting crimes.
Weak Implementation of Laws
Although Pakistan has laws against harassment, their implementation remains weak. Many victims do not report incidents because they lack confidence in the justice system. The government must strictly enforce existing laws and launch awareness campaigns to educate citizens about their rights.
Empowerment and Action Needed
Girls and women should be empowered to raise their voices whenever they face harassment. If this issue continues to be ignored, the culture of silence will deepen and victims will remain reluctant to speak out. Ensuring women’s safety is essential for building a just and progressive society.
