WAPDA Inks Rs973M Livelihood Deal for Dam Communities

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has formalized an agreement to initiate livelihood development schemes valued at approximately Rs973 million for communities residing in the Diamer Bhasha Dam project area. This represents a significant advancement in the project's broader socio-economic development program, which is tied to one of Pakistan's largest hydropower and water storage undertakings.

MoU Signing and Key Stakeholders

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was executed between the Diamer Bhasha Dam Project of WAPDA and the District Administration of Diamer. The pact aims to implement projects worth Rs972.571 million under the project's Confidence Building Measures (CBMs). The agreement was signed by General Manager and Project Director of the Diamer Bhasha Dam Project, Dr. Engr. Nazakat Hussain, and Deputy Commissioner Diamer Lt. (r) Muhammad Owais Abbasi, in the presence of Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Secretary Arshad Majeed.

Implementation and Oversight

Under the terms of the agreement, the livelihood initiatives will be executed through relevant government departments under the supervision of the Diamer district administration and in consultation with local communities. According to officials, a joint oversight committee comprising representatives from the district administration, WAPDA, and the local community will monitor implementation and ensure the quality of the development schemes, as reported by Gwadar Pro.
