Acwa Secures Exclusive Export Mandate for Green Hydrogen
Saudi utility giant Acwa has received an exclusive government mandate to export green hydrogen and its derivatives produced in the Kingdom to international markets, including green ammonia, green methanol and green fuels. In a statement, Acwa said the mandate positions the company as a key player in advancing Saudi Arabia’s strategy to become a global leader in clean energy exports.
Supporting Vision 2030 and Low-Carbon Economy
The government approval supports the Kingdom’s strategic objective of establishing itself as a global leader in clean energy exports and accelerating the development of a diversified, low-carbon economy under Vision 2030. At the heart of this mission lies Neom Green Hydrogen Co., through which the Kingdom aims to become a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen. The company, a joint venture between Acwa, Neom and Air Products, is expected to produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen per day by the end of 2026.
CEO Samir Serhan Highlights Kingdom's Confidence
Samir Serhan, CEO at Acwa, said: “This government approval reflects the Kingdom’s confidence in Acwa’s ability to deliver strategic infrastructure at scale and reinforces our responsibility to help position Saudi Arabia as a leading global exporter of clean energy.” He added: “Green hydrogen and renewable electricity exports represent the next chapter in the Kingdom’s energy leadership, creating new opportunities for economic growth while contributing to global energy security and the energy transition.”
Acwa to Develop Renewable Electricity Exports to Europe and Arab Markets
In a bourse filing, Acwa said it has also been tasked with developing projects to produce, transmit and export electricity generated from renewable energy sources to European and Arab markets, supporting regional energy security while enabling the Kingdom to export competitively priced clean power. Serhan noted: “Our experience in developing, financing, constructing, and operating large-scale renewable energy and green hydrogen projects provides the execution foundation that this assignment demands.”
Strategic Partnerships and Integrated Export Infrastructure
“We look forward to working closely with government entities, strategic partners, and international stakeholders to develop the integrated export infrastructure that connects Saudi Arabia’s abundant renewable resources with growing global demand for clean molecules and clean electricity,” Serhan added. The statement further reinforced the company’s position as a strategic national partner in developing infrastructure that supports the Kingdom’s long-term economic diversification, industrial development and global energy leadership.
Financial Disclosures and Prior Agreements
Acwa said it would disclose any material developments and the financial impact of the approval in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. This approval is also expected to support the implementation of several agreements signed by Acwa to export green hydrogen from the Kingdom. In July 2025, Acwa signed a series of agreements and memorandums of understanding to export renewable energy and green hydrogen to Europe under the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor project. In February, Acwa signed a memorandum of understanding for a Green Ammonia Corridor with German counterparts, including EnBW Energie Baden-Wurttemberg AG, building on prior collaboration for the Yanbu green hydrogen hub and aiming to strengthen export pathways to Europe and Germany.
