A 50-foot breach that developed late last night at RD 51 of the Begari Sindh (BS) Feeder has turned into a major disaster, submerging hundreds of villages and displacing thousands of people from Buxapur, Kandhkot and adjoining areas.
Rapid Widening of the Breach
According to eyewitnesses and local residents, the breach widened to 150 feet within a few hours due to the strong water pressure, worsening the flood situation. Initially measuring around 50 feet, the breach rapidly expanded to approximately 150 feet, unleashing a powerful surge of water that inundated residential areas, farmlands and roads.
The fast-rising floodwater has caused panic among local communities, with many families scrambling to move their belongings and livestock to safer places. The floodwater entered more than 180 villages of Buxapur and Kandhkot.
Residents Describe Nightmare Scenario
A local resident said, 'The water came suddenly in the middle of the night. We had no time to save our belongings. Our homes, crops and livestock have been destroyed.' The affected people have appealed to the Chief Minister Sindh, Irrigation Minister and Deputy Commissioner Kashmore to take immediate measures to plug the breach, which widened to 150 feet, and launch rescue operations, and provide relief goods, tents, and medical aid to displaced families.
Lack of Official Response
It is pertinent to mention here that despite passage of 20 hours, the concerned authorities have failed to plug the breach. The breach in BS feeder has not only inundated villages but also destroyed hundreds of acres of irrigated lands and other crops. It has also triggered the displacement of people from about 20 villages to safer places.
Till the filing of this report, neither the Irrigation Department nor the district administration had issued any official statement regarding the cause of the breach or its plan to plug it.
