The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather forecast predicting a fresh spell of rain across various parts of Pakistan from July 7 to July 10. Showers and thunderstorms are expected in Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, the Potohar region, and northeastern Punjab.
Weather System Entry and Duration
According to the authority, the weather system is likely to enter the northern parts of the country on Monday, July 7, bringing widespread rain accompanied by thunder and lightning over the four-day period. The NDMA stated that rainfall is also expected in areas along the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers.
Impact on Rivers and Dams
The precipitation may lead to a slight increase in river flows, while inflows into Tarbela and Mangla dams are also projected to rise. The NDMA said the forecast rainfall does not pose a threat of large-scale river flooding. However, water levels in hill torrents and seasonal streams could increase.
Advisories and Potential Hazards
The authority warned of possible waterlogging in low-lying urban areas and cautioned that landslides may occur in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the forecast period. In response, Punjab has issued an advisory to protect crops during the monsoon rains.
