PM Shahbaz Sharif Approves New Energy Plan Secretariat for Better Coordination
PM Approves Separate Secretariat for National Energy Plan

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken a decisive step to streamline Pakistan's energy policy by approving the creation of a separate secretariat for the Comprehensive National Energy Plan (CNEP). This move is designed to enhance coordination among federal ministries and provincial governments, aiming to develop a unified and practical strategy for the country's power sector.

A Push for Coordinated Policy

While chairing a review meeting on the recommendations of the cabinet’s sub-committee on energy, the Prime Minister emphasized the critical need for close collaboration. He stressed that all relevant ministries and provinces must work together to formulate a realistic and implementable energy strategy. The newly approved secretariat will serve as the central hub for this collaborative effort.

Key Directives and Approvals

During the session, several important decisions were made. The Prime Minister directed that the CNEP must incorporate input from key ministries, including Climate Change, Finance, Industries and Production, and Petroleum. This ensures a holistic approach that considers economic, industrial, and environmental factors.

Furthermore, the meeting approved the framework guidelines for the auction of wheeling charges, a technical but crucial aspect of power transmission. In a significant directive, Shahbaz Sharif instructed authorities to expedite the privatisation process of electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) in an effective manner, seeking long-term improvements in service delivery.

Focus on Affordability and Reliability

The Prime Minister clearly underlined the plan's ultimate goals. He stated that ensuring affordable electricity for industries and a reliable, convenient supply for households must remain a top priority. This dual focus aims to boost economic productivity while providing relief to the common citizen.

Officials briefed the meeting that initial consultations with all concerned ministries are already in progress. They also reported that recent reforms in the electricity transmission system have started yielding noticeable improvements.

The high-level review was attended by federal ministers, provincial chief secretaries, and senior government officials, highlighting the national importance placed on resolving the energy crisis.
