I would like to bring attention to the issue of high Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) taxes imposed on mobile phones in Pakistan. In today's world, a smartphone is no longer a luxury item; it has become a basic necessity for students, professionals, freelancers, business owners, and ordinary citizens alike. From online classes and banking to communication and remote work, almost every aspect of modern life now depends on mobile technology. However, the increasing PTA taxes on mobile phones have made many devices extremely expensive and unaffordable for the middle class.
The Burden of PTA Taxes
In many cases, the PTA tax itself is nearly equal to the actual price of the phone. As a result, many people are forced to use outdated devices or rely on illegal and unregistered phones. While the government may aim to increase revenue and regulate imported devices, such heavy taxation creates difficulties for the public and slows digital accessibility.
Need for a Balanced Policy
Instead of treating smartphones as luxury products, policymakers should recognise them as an essential part of modern life and education. A balanced taxation policy should be introduced, under which reasonable taxes are applied, especially on devices commonly used by students and working individuals. This would not only reduce the financial burden on citizens but also encourage the use of legally registered devices in the country.
