The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has delivered another jolt to consumers across Pakistan by increasing electricity tariffs by Rs1.19 per unit under the Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for April 2026. However, in a simultaneous move, the authority has reduced tariffs by Rs1.98 per unit under the quarterly adjustment mechanism, offering some relief to the public.
Details of the Tariff Changes
According to a NEPRA notification, the electricity rates have been raised by Rs1.19 per unit for all consumers across the country, including those in Karachi. This increase is part of the monthly fuel price adjustment for April 2026. The notification specifies that the adjustment will also apply to consumers of K-Electric, the power utility serving Karachi, and the increase will be reflected in electricity bills issued during June.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency had initially sought an increase of Rs1.73 per unit under the April fuel price adjustment. However, NEPRA approved a lower hike of Rs1.19 per unit.
Quarterly Adjustment Provides Relief
In a contrasting development, electricity tariffs have been reduced by Rs1.98 per unit under the first quarterly adjustment of 2026. This quarterly adjustment is expected to provide consumers with relief exceeding Rs67 billion. The notification states that the quarterly adjustment will be applicable to electricity bills issued in June, July, and August. Under this mechanism, consumers will receive a reduction of Rs1.98 per unit each month for a period of three months.
The relief will apply nationwide, including to K-Electric consumers. However, lifeline consumers, who use minimal electricity, will remain exempt from the quarterly adjustment.
Impact on Consumers
The net effect of these adjustments will vary for different consumer categories. While the fuel price adjustment increases the tariff, the quarterly adjustment provides a temporary reduction. Consumers are advised to check their bills carefully for the applicable charges.
