The federal government has raised the petroleum levy on petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) while keeping retail fuel prices unchanged for another week, thereby denying consumers the benefit of declining international oil prices, according to official data released by the Petroleum Division.
Levy Increase Details
The petroleum levy on HSD increased by Rs6.57 per litre, bringing it to Rs79.54 per litre. For petrol, the levy rose by 39 paisa per litre to Rs66.64 per litre. The levy on kerosene oil remains unchanged at Rs20.36 per litre. The increase follows a government decision to hold petrol and HSD prices steady for one week, despite a drop in global oil prices.
Impact on Consumers
As a result, consumers will continue paying the same prices for petrol and diesel, while the government's share from the petroleum levy has increased. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) issued a notification confirming the new levy rates. Petroleum Division sources stated that the levy increase applies only to petrol and HSD, with kerosene levy unchanged.
Kerosene Price Reduction
In contrast, the government reduced the price of kerosene oil by Rs6.85 per litre, fixing it at Rs227.05 per litre, down from the previous Rs233.90 per litre. This reduction provides some relief to households using kerosene for heating and cooking.
Jet Fuel Price Cut
Additionally, the government lowered the price of jet fuel used by commercial aircraft by Rs7.15 per litre, setting the new price at Rs231.72 per litre. This reduction may help lower airline operating costs.
