Pakistan's seafood exports soared to an unprecedented $568 million during the 2025-26 fiscal year, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced on Tuesday. This record-breaking figure marks a significant milestone for the country's fisheries sector, underscoring the effectiveness of government initiatives aimed at strengthening the blue economy and expanding international market access.
Top Export Categories and Key Markets
According to the minister, frozen fish emerged as the leading export category, generating $105.09 million. It was followed by frozen squid and cuttlefish at $103.71 million, and fish meal at $83.12 million. Other major contributors included shrimps ($62.14 million), crabs ($36.89 million), sardines ($30.62 million), mackerels ($22.67 million), flatfish ($17.24 million), octopus ($15.18 million), and minced fish meat, known as surimi ($14.63 million).
Pakistan's seafood found its way to diverse global markets, with primary destinations including China, Thailand, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Indonesia, and the United States.
Resilience Amid Regional Challenges
The minister highlighted that the record performance was achieved despite disruptions to regional trade and maritime logistics caused by the evolving situation in the Gulf region. He described this achievement as a testament to the resilience of the fisheries sector and the unwavering commitment of exporters and regulatory institutions. The government's focus on ensuring compliance with international food safety and quality standards played a pivotal role in sustaining export growth.
Government Recognition and Future Plans
Chaudhry commended Dr. Mansoor Ali Wassan and the Marine Fisheries Department for their efforts in maintaining international standards, strengthening regulatory oversight, and facilitating access to overseas markets. He announced that a performance review ceremony would be held to recognize the country's top 10 fisheries exporters, with certificates of appreciation to be presented by the prime minister.
Looking ahead, the minister stated that the government would continue to prioritize improving quality assurance systems, diversifying export destinations, promoting value addition, and enhancing the global competitiveness of Pakistan's fisheries industry. He congratulated the Marine Fisheries Department, the Pakistan Fisheries Exporters Association, fish processors, exporters, and other stakeholders on achieving this historic export performance.
