Abu Dhabi Unveils Gehry-Designed Arts Center Dar Al-Funoon

The Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi has announced plans for Dar Al-Funoon, a major performing arts center designed by the late architect Frank Gehry. The venue, scheduled to open in 2030, will be located on Saadiyat Island, already home to cultural landmarks such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Key Features and Venues

Dar Al-Funoon, Arabic for 'house of the arts,' will host ballet, opera, theater, and other performances. The center will include a 2,000-seat multipurpose performance hall, a 3,500-seat open-air amphitheater, a studio theater, and a jazz venue. Gehry’s design features a vast billowing fabric-like exterior over the site, reflecting his signature style.

Cultural Investment and Partnerships

Mohamed Khalifa Al-Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, described the project as a deliberate investment in the future of the cultural ecosystem. “Through artistic residencies, international partnerships and world-class productions, it will expand opportunities for cultural exchange, inspire new generations of creatives and further strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a global centre for creativity, exchange and artistic excellence,” he said.
