Over the years, the Holy Kaaba's kiswa has been crafted by skilled artisans who shaped its artistic character. The late calligrapher Abdul Rahim Amin Bukhari is among the most notable for his work in Arabic calligraphy and Islamic design.
Early Life and Talent
Born in Makkah in 1917, Bukhari grew up in a cultural environment that valued Islamic arts and showed early talent in Arabic calligraphy. His talent developed into a long career serving the Holy Kaaba, during which he refined and beautified the Arabic inscriptions and decorative elements of the kiswa.
Contributions to the Kiswa
His work included embroidered inscriptions on the kiswa, the calligraphy and design of the Kaaba's curtain, and decorative inscriptions on its gates. Over 30 years, he contributed to 21 kiswas and supervised calligraphy and decoration for three Kaaba gates, becoming a respected figure in the craft.
Recognition and Legacy
In recognition of his service, his name was inscribed on the kiswa during King Faisal's reign. It remains on the kiswa to this day as a lasting tribute to his contribution and legacy.
