Pakistan proposes Rs187.2bn for social sector spending

The government of Pakistan has unveiled plans to significantly boost social sector spending in the upcoming fiscal year, proposing a total allocation of Rs187.2 billion to support poverty alleviation and sustainable development initiatives under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework.

Key Allocations in the Proposed Budget

According to the budget proposals, Rs70 billion has been set aside for the SDGs Achievement Programme, which aims to improve the welfare of poor and marginalised communities across the country. This marks a substantial increase from the current fiscal year's allocation of Rs147 billion, bringing the proposed social sector allocation to Rs187 billion.

Education Sector Funding

A total of Rs78.5 billion has been proposed for the education sector and the Higher Education Commission (HEC). This funding is intended to enhance educational infrastructure, support higher education institutions, and promote research and development.

Scholarships for Underprivileged Students

To support underprivileged students nationwide, Rs3 billion has been earmarked for the Pakistan Education Endowment Fund. This fund will provide educational scholarships to deserving students, enabling them to pursue higher education and contribute to the country's socio-economic development.

The proposed increase in social sector spending underscores the government's commitment to achieving the SDGs and improving the quality of life for all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable segments of society.
