Madonna has revealed she was jealous of Kylie Minogue and strongly hinted she will headline Glastonbury in 2027, during an extensive interview with Graham Norton on BBC One. The nearly hour-long conversation covered her upcoming album Confessions II, her dance roots, family dynamics, and a surprise appearance by Kylie herself.
Madonna’s Jealousy Confession
Kylie Minogue appeared in the interview disguised as a barmaid, serving Madonna a grapefruit cocktail. This came 26 years after Madonna wore a bedazzled “Kylie Minogue” tank top at the 1998 MTV Europe Music Awards in Sweden, a gesture Kylie said she “probably stopped shy of fainting” upon seeing. Madonna then admitted, “I was actually a little bit jealous of you.” When asked why, she explained, “Because she was so cute. I think my ex-husband at the time [Guy Ritchie] had a crush on her, and I was like, ‘I’ll never be as beautiful as Kylie’.”
Glastonbury 2027 Hint
Madonna was widely rumored to headline Glastonbury in 2024, but negotiations fell through. Discussing touring plans with Norton, she suggested 2027 could be the year. “I think I’ll do promo tours for a while, then in the summertime something bigger,” she said. Norton replied, “Oh, that sounds really exciting and good. I think I know what you’re talking about.” They shared a knowing look, and Norton sought confirmation: “Is it in this country?”
Album Confessions II: A Dancefloor Journey
Madonna’s forthcoming album, Confessions II, finds her in her natural habitat of the dancefloor. “That’s how I started,” she told Norton. “I was a dancer. Dancing is in my DNA. It just creates community and sometimes relationships.” The record reflects on her origins in 1980s New York but also features a duet with her daughter Lourdes “Lola” Leon, addressing strains in their relationship. Another track, Fragile, mourns her brother Christopher, who died of cancer in 2024.
Duet with Daughter Lola
Madonna’s eldest daughter, Lourdes “Lola” Leon, 29, appears on Confessions II for the first time. “She approached me,” Madonna said. “She’s been very reticent to work with me. She doesn’t want to be perceived as my daughter taking advantage of her privilege. She’s been very stand-offish, working at her own pace, and I respect that deeply.” Lola eventually came to her mother, saying she was holding onto resentment. “Let’s write a song together, I think it’ll be a very healing experience,” Lola said. Madonna agreed: “OK, you’re on. Let’s do it.”
Dancing and Community
Madonna expressed excitement for fans to hear the record “because it’s a whole story... I can’t just make dance music about nothing.” However, she admitted that “nobody ever wants to dance with me” because she gets carried away. “I just go crazy. I think I irritate a lot of people.” The interview aired on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
