Oprah Winfrey Shares Emotional Story About Whitney Houston at Cannes Lions
Oprah Winfrey, during her appearance at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, recounted a powerful and emotional moment from her talk show days involving the late singer Whitney Houston. Winfrey described how she formed a strong bond with her audience over the years, and that bond was tested when Houston appeared on her show during a difficult period in the singer's life.
The talk-show legend recalled that before filming an interview with Houston, she stopped the cameras and went backstage to ask the singer: 'So tell me, what do you want to happen here?' Winfrey then shared her own intentions for the interview, which she later called one of the most powerful she ever conducted.
Houston's Return and the Stage Fall
Years later, Houston returned to The Oprah Winfrey Show, but by then the pop icon had reportedly fallen back into drug use. Winfrey noted that it was likely Houston's last appearance on the show. The effects of the relapse were immediate: before the show, Houston fell off the stage while performing in front of the live audience.
'The day she came to my show and then to perform in front of the audience, she was not, and she fell off of the stage,' Winfrey said, describing the incident.
Winfrey's Plea to Protect Houston's Reputation
Winfrey quickly realized that if news of the fall became public, Houston's reputation would be destroyed. 'I knew that if that story got out … she would be destroyed by that,' the talk-show legend recalled. In response, she pleaded with audience members who had cameras not to share what had happened on stage.
'And so even though the audience was there and the audience had cameras, I begged them not to put those pictures out because it would ruin her life, and they did not,' Winfrey said.
Contrast With Today's Social Media
Winfrey concluded by highlighting a stark contrast between the audience's restraint in that moment and the behavior prevalent in today's social media-driven world. 'That would not happen today, I can tell you that,' she said, pointing out how quickly such an incident would be shared and amplified online.
The story serves as a testament to the unique trust and respect Winfrey cultivated with her audience over the years, a dynamic she believes is largely absent in the current digital landscape.
