Sydney Sweeney has lined up another high-profile project, with the actress set to star in Hollow, a new film adaptation of Lindsey Anderson Beer's upcoming debut novel. The project offers a modern reimagining of Washington Irving's classic 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and is expected to bring a darker, more contemporary perspective to one of literature's most enduring supernatural tales.
Creative Team and Novel Details
According to reports, Anderson Beer will both write and direct the adaptation. The filmmaker previously made her feature directorial debut with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines and has built a reputation for working within the thriller and horror genres. Her novel Hollow is scheduled for publication in autumn 2027 after being acquired by Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
Sweeney's Role and Character Focus
In the new adaptation, Sweeney is attached to play Katrina Van Tassel, a character familiar to readers of Irving's original story. While the classic tale focused heavily on schoolteacher Ichabod Crane and his rivalry with Brom Bones, Hollow places Katrina at the centre of the narrative. The film is described as a gothic and erotic thriller that explores a dangerous supernatural love triangle, giving the character a far more prominent role than in previous versions of the story.
Literary Legacy and Fresh Perspective
The original The Legend of Sleepy Hollow remains one of the most famous works in American literature. First published in 1820, the story introduced readers to the mysterious Headless Horseman and helped establish many of the themes that continue to influence supernatural fiction today. By shifting the focus to Katrina, the new adaptation aims to revisit familiar material through a fresh lens while retaining the eerie atmosphere associated with the source material.
Sweeney's Rising Career and Production Involvement
The project also marks another significant collaboration for Sweeney as she continues to expand her presence across film and television. Over the past several years, the actress has emerged as one of Hollywood's most sought-after stars, balancing critically acclaimed performances with commercially successful projects. Production company LuckyChap is attached to produce the film alongside Anderson Beer's Brew Lab banner. Sweeney will also serve as a producer through her newly launched company Honey Trap. The involvement of several experienced production partners is expected to make the package one of the more closely watched projects heading into the marketplace.
Recent Success and Market Anticipation
The announcement follows the success of Sweeney's recent thriller work. She starred alongside Amanda Seyfried in The Housemaid, the adaptation of Freida McFadden's bestselling novel, which reportedly earned more than $400 million worldwide. A sequel based on The Housemaid's Secret is already scheduled for release in 2027. While a studio has not yet been announced for Hollow, industry interest is expected to be strong when the project is formally presented to potential buyers.
