Upper Room Apologizes for Mark Lee's Confederate Flag T-Shirt

Upper Room has issued an apology after photographs surfaced showing singer Mark Lee wearing a T-shirt featuring the Confederate flag, a symbol widely associated with racism and white supremacy in the United States. The label released a statement on Instagram Stories on June 23, addressing the controversy and accepting responsibility for the incident.

Statement of Apology

“We would like to extend our sincere apologies for the concern, discomfort, and disappointment caused by the vintage T-shirt that appeared in a recently shared photograph,” the statement read. The company explained that the item was chosen solely as a vintage fashion piece. However, after recognizing the historical significance and sensitivity of the symbol, it attempted to ensure the flag would not appear in official content. Despite those efforts, the image was later shared externally.

Recognition of Oversight

The statement noted that intent did not lessen the impact of the image and acknowledged that “this matter should have been handled with greater diligence and care.” Upper Room said, “We take full responsibility for this oversight. Upper Room and the artist unequivocally reject and do not tolerate racism, hate, discrimination, or any form of intolerance.”

Context of the Incident

Fan reports indicate the photographs were taken during a fan event. The images were reportedly first shared by Upper Room on social media before being removed. The Anti-Defamation League classifies the Confederate flag as a hate symbol because of its historical links to slavery, racial oppression, and white supremacy.

Background on Mark Lee

Mark Lee launched Upper Room earlier this month, following his departure from NCT 127 and NCT DREAM in April. The apology comes as the label seeks to address the fallout from the controversial imagery.
