Christopher Nolan Reveals All Four Children Worked on The Odyssey
Nolan's Kids Worked on The Odyssey Behind the Scenes

Christopher Nolan has revealed that all four of his children joined him and his wife Emma Thomas behind the scenes on The Odyssey, making the production a true family affair. Speaking to E! News ahead of the film's release, the acclaimed filmmaker reflected on the experience of having his entire family involved in the ambitious project.

Family Roles on Set

While Thomas served as producer, their four adult children—Flora, Oliver, Rory and Magnus—each worked in different departments across the production. Nolan described the experience as both rewarding and memorable, explaining that each of his children contributed in practical rather than glamorous roles. 'It was great. I have four kids, and all four of them were able to work,' Nolan said. 'They're all in different departments scattered.' He added that none of them were given high profile positions simply because they were part of the family. 'They weren't doing the glamorous jobs on set, but I think they had a lot of fun and it was great to have them along.'

A Rare Glimpse into Private Family Life

The comments offer a rare glimpse into Nolan's family life, which he and Thomas have largely kept private despite spending decades at the forefront of Hollywood. The couple have worked together on nearly every major project throughout Nolan's career, with Thomas producing films including Memento, The Prestige, Inception, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer and now The Odyssey.

Nolan's View on Filmmaking as a Career

Asked whether he would encourage his children to pursue careers in filmmaking, Nolan made it clear that he sees the profession as an extraordinary opportunity rather than something to avoid. 'I think I'm very, very lucky to do what I do, and I get to work with wonderful creative people, and I get to put a group of people together on a project with a shared sense of creative purpose,' he said. He continued by describing filmmaking as a privilege. 'I think I have the greatest job in the world, and I think the movie business is just a wonderful privilege to be able to work.'

Growing Up on Film Sets

For the Nolan family, film sets have long been part of everyday life. In a 2018 interview with Vanity Fair, Emma Thomas explained that working alongside her husband had allowed their children to grow up around film productions. She said one advantage of producing films with Nolan was being able to bring their children to work, making it easier to balance demanding careers with family life.

Fatherhood's Influence on Storytelling

Over the years, Nolan has occasionally acknowledged that becoming a father influenced his storytelling. Following the release of Interstellar in 2014, Thomas suggested the film reflected emotions that became more meaningful after they had children. Nolan later agreed that the science fiction drama explored the emotional challenges of parenthood, particularly the guilt many parents experience when work keeps them away from their children. He explained at the time that the story was ultimately about being a father and the sadness that comes from watching children grow up while life moves forward.
