In Pakistan, a quiet crisis unfolds daily as hundreds of Instagram accounts belonging to Pakistani users are suspended. These accounts, belonging to small business owners, artists, journalists, and ordinary people, vanish overnight without warning or explanation. Users receive only automated messages citing vague “community guidelines” and face a dead-end appeals process.
Impact on Livelihoods
For many Pakistanis, Instagram is not just a hobby but a livelihood. The digital economy offers one of the few accessible paths to independent income, especially for women and young entrepreneurs. Losing an account without cause leads to financial devastation, leaving users shocked and helpless.
Lack of Accountability
Meta profits from Pakistani users through advertisements and business revenue but offers no local representative, effective regulatory oversight, or legal protections. This systemic issue reflects broader unchecked platform power against users in the Global South.
Call for Action
Pakistan’s digital authorities must engage with Meta to demand transparency. Local media should report this as a systemic crisis, and international digital rights organizations must pay attention. The digital community has been patient; it is time for regulators and policymakers to act.
