Anti-Polio Drive Starts in 79 Districts Across Pakistan

The anti-polio drive of varied duration has commenced in 79 districts across Pakistan, aiming to vaccinate millions of children under five years of age. The campaign, launched by the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination, will run for different periods depending on the district's polio risk assessment.

Campaign Details

In high-risk districts, the drive will last for five days, while in moderate-risk areas, it will continue for three days. Low-risk districts will see a two-day campaign. The initiative targets approximately 40 million children, with health workers going door-to-door to administer polio drops.

Focus on High-Risk Areas

Special attention is being given to 44 high-risk districts, including parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh provinces. These areas have reported polio cases in recent years and require intensified efforts to interrupt virus transmission.

The campaign involves over 260,000 frontline health workers, including vaccinators, supervisors, and security personnel. Strict adherence to standard operating procedures is being ensured to maintain vaccine quality and safety.

Government Commitment

Federal Minister for Health, Abdul Qadir Patel, emphasized the government's commitment to eradicating polio from the country. He urged parents to cooperate with vaccination teams and ensure their children receive the life-saving vaccine.

The polio eradication program has faced challenges due to misinformation and security concerns in some areas. However, the government is working closely with provincial authorities and international partners to overcome these obstacles.

International Support

The World Health Organization and UNICEF are providing technical and logistical support for the campaign. They have lauded Pakistan's efforts in reducing polio cases significantly over the past few years.

In 2023, Pakistan reported only six polio cases, a sharp decline from 147 cases in 2019. The current drive aims to maintain this momentum and achieve zero cases by 2024.

Public Awareness

The health ministry has launched an extensive awareness campaign through media and community engagement to counter vaccine hesitancy. Religious leaders and local influencers are also being involved to promote vaccination.

Parents are advised to ensure their children receive polio drops during the campaign, even if they have been vaccinated before. Repeated doses are necessary to boost immunity and protect against the virus.
