The Annual Plan Coordination Committee (APCC) is scheduled to convene today to consider the proposed Rs1.126 trillion Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the upcoming fiscal year. The meeting, chaired by the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, will review the allocations for various development projects across the country.
Key Highlights of the PSDP
The proposed PSDP for the next fiscal year marks a significant increase from the previous year's allocations, reflecting the government's commitment to infrastructure development and economic growth. Key sectors expected to receive substantial funding include energy, transport, water resources, and social services.
Energy Sector
A major portion of the PSDP is likely to be allocated to the energy sector, focusing on power generation, transmission, and distribution projects. This includes investments in renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, as well as the completion of ongoing hydropower projects.
Transport and Infrastructure
Significant funds are earmarked for the transport and infrastructure sector, including the construction and rehabilitation of highways, motorways, and railways. The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) related projects are also expected to receive continued support.
Water Resources
The water resources sector will see increased investment in dam construction, irrigation systems, and water supply projects to address the country's water scarcity issues and boost agricultural productivity.
Social Sector Development
The PSDP also prioritizes social sector development, with allocations for education, health, and poverty alleviation programs. The government aims to improve access to quality education and healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas.
Education
Funding for education will focus on building new schools, upgrading existing facilities, and promoting higher education and research. Special attention will be given to technical and vocational training to enhance employability.
Health
Health sector allocations will target the improvement of healthcare infrastructure, including the construction of hospitals and basic health units, as well as the procurement of medical equipment and supplies.
Regional Balance
The APCC will also consider the regional distribution of PSDP funds to ensure balanced development across all provinces. Special development packages for less developed areas, including Balochistan and the merged tribal districts, are expected to be part of the programme.
The meeting is expected to finalize the PSDP after detailed discussions on the proposed allocations. The approved programme will then be presented to the National Assembly for approval as part of the federal budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
