The official death toll in an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 400, according to figures released on Thursday by the National Institute of Public Health.

The highly contagious disease has claimed 438 lives, with 1,406 people infected since the outbreak was declared in northeastern Ituri province on May 15, the institute said in its latest report.

Response Efforts
Congolese health workers, along with teams from the World Health Organization and other partners, are intensifying vaccination campaigns and contact tracing. The Bundibugyo strain, which is less common than the Zaire strain, has been identified in this outbreak.
