A public dialogue titled "Pakistan: Thirsty While Sitting Beside Water" was held in Taxila, where experts, civil society representatives, and local residents discussed the country's worsening water crisis in detail. They warned that Pakistan could face severe challenges in the future if immediate measures are not taken to conserve and manage water resources effectively.
Event Details
The event took place at Kiani House in the scenic and historic city of Taxila. It was organized through a collaboration between the Gandhara Taxila Centre for Development (GTCD), Gandhara Odyssey Private Limited, and Taxila Baithak.
Key Concerns Raised
The discussion focused on the rapidly growing issues of water scarcity, water pollution, and the inefficient use of water resources in Pakistan. Chief guest Dr. Hassan Abbas, a renowned water resources expert, stated that Pakistan is increasingly becoming one of the countries where per capita water availability is declining to alarming levels.
Dr. Abbas noted that climate change, population growth, excessive extraction of groundwater, and poor water management have further aggravated the situation. He stressed the need for effective policymaking at the national level, expansion of water storage capacity, adoption of modern irrigation systems, and greater public awareness to ensure water conservation.
He warned that failure to take serious action today would leave future generations facing acute water shortages and the resulting social and economic challenges.
Participants' Recommendations
Participants shared their views and recommendations, agreeing that the water crisis is not solely the responsibility of government institutions but a collective responsibility of every citizen. Speakers highlighted the need to prevent water wastage at domestic, agricultural, and industrial levels and to promote its efficient and responsible use.
The participants expressed their commitment to safeguarding Pakistan's water future through public awareness, practical initiatives at the local level, and collective efforts.
Call for Cooperation
At the conclusion of the session, speakers emphasized stronger cooperation among experts, social activists, and local communities and called for a coordinated strategy to address the country's water challenges.
