The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert forecasting widespread dust storms, strong winds, rain, and thunderstorms across several parts of the country from June 11 to June 13. The department has warned of potential urban flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage during this period.
Weather System Details
According to the Met Office, a western weather system is expected to enter the upper regions of Pakistan on June 11 and remain active through June 13. Moist air currents from the Arabian Sea are also likely to affect upper and central areas during this period.
Affected Regions
Under the influence of these weather conditions, intermittent rain, thunderstorms, dust storms, and gusty winds are expected in Islamabad, various districts of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Heavy rainfall and hailstorms may occur in isolated locations. The department also forecast rain and thunderstorms in northeastern areas of Balochistan, while upper parts of Sindh are expected to experience strong winds and dust storms.
Potential Hazards
The PMD warned that powerful winds, lightning, and hailstorms could damage weak structures, solar panels, electricity poles, and outdoor advertising boards. Officials further cautioned that intense rainfall may lead to urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad. In mountainous regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, heavy rain could increase the likelihood of landslides and travel disruptions.
Advisory for Public
The weather department has advised farmers to take preventive measures to safeguard crops, while tourists and travellers have been urged to stay informed about weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel during adverse conditions. Authorities are on alert to respond to any emergencies arising from the expected severe weather.
