Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Sindh has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing a liver transplant for the first time. The procedure was conducted on a patient suffering from end-stage liver disease, marking a breakthrough for healthcare in the region.
Details of the Procedure
The transplant was performed by a team of local and international experts, including surgeons from the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI). The surgery lasted over eight hours and involved a multidisciplinary approach. The patient, a 45-year-old male from Khairpur, is now recovering well and has been discharged from the intensive care unit.
Significance for Sindh Healthcare
This achievement positions GIMS as a key center for organ transplantation in Sindh, reducing the need for patients to travel to Karachi or abroad for such procedures. Dr. Abdul Bari, CEO of GIMS, stated that the hospital is now equipped to perform liver transplants regularly, with plans to establish a dedicated liver transplant unit.
The successful transplant is expected to boost confidence in public healthcare facilities in the province. It also highlights the importance of collaboration between local and international medical institutions in advancing healthcare delivery.
Future Plans
GIMS aims to perform at least two liver transplants per month, with a focus on affordability and accessibility. The hospital is also working on increasing awareness about organ donation and establishing a registry for potential donors.
