Proposal for Visa-Free Chinese Entry to Gilgit-Baltistan Presented to Bilawal
Visa-Free Chinese Entry to Gilgit-Baltistan Proposed

A proposal to allow Chinese nationals to enter Gilgit-Baltistan without visas was presented to Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain on Monday. The proposal mirrors the existing travel arrangement that allows G-B residents to visit China's Xinjiang region without visas.

Proposal Part of Broader Development Plan

The visa-free entry proposal was part of a broader plan to boost tourism and economic development in the region. It came during a high-level briefing on Gilgit-Baltistan's development challenges and opportunities, attended by Bilawal, Chief Minister Amjad Hussain, and former Gilgit-Baltistan governor Qamar Zaman Kaira.

Key Demands Raised at Briefing

Officials also urged the construction of an international airport in Gilgit, immediate steps to end prolonged electricity load-shedding, and measures to address the growing shortage of subsidised wheat. They emphasized that allowing Chinese visitors to enter G-B without visas, similar to the existing arrangement for G-B residents traveling to Xinjiang, could significantly boost tourism and strengthen economic activity.

Bilawal Pledges Support

Addressing the meeting, Bilawal pledged full support for Gilgit-Baltistan's development. According to a statement from the PPP, Bilawal assured that the party would prioritize the region's needs and work towards implementing the proposed measures.

Existing Arrangement with China

Currently, residents of Gilgit-Baltistan can travel to China's Xinjiang region without visas under a bilateral agreement. The new proposal seeks to reciprocate this arrangement by allowing Chinese nationals visa-free entry into G-B, which officials believe will attract more tourists and investors from China.

Economic and Tourism Impact

The region, known for its scenic beauty and strategic location along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, stands to benefit from increased Chinese tourism and investment. Officials estimate that visa-free access could lead to a significant rise in Chinese visitors, boosting local businesses and creating jobs. The proposed international airport would further enhance connectivity, while resolving electricity shortages and wheat supply issues would improve the quality of life for residents.
