China calls on US and Iran to honor ceasefire, avoid new war

China on Wednesday called on the United States and Iran to honor the ceasefire, urging both sides to avoid renewed warfare. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing that China is deeply concerned over the current situation.

US Strikes on Qeshm Island

The statement from the Chinese government came after the US said it conducted strikes on Qeshm Island in response to attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East. The US army and its partner military forces intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones, according to the Pentagon.

Kuwait's Response

Kuwait also reported that its air defense systems responded to hostile missile and drone attacks in the early hours of Wednesday.

Mao emphasized that renewed warfare serves no one's interest. She expressed hope that relevant parties can cherish the opportunities for peace, honor ceasefire commitments, and maintain the momentum of negotiations. She urged all sides to stick to dispute settlement through political and diplomatic means, realize a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire at an early date, and create necessary conditions for the restoration of peace and tranquility in the Middle East.

The US and Iran have engaged in fresh air strikes despite a ceasefire in place since April 8. The conflict began after the US and Israel initiated a war on Iran on February 28. The situation remains tense, with international calls for restraint continuing.
