India and New Zealand Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership During Modi's Historic Visit
India, New Zealand Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership

India and New Zealand elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic engagement. The announcement came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his first visit to New Zealand in 40 years, held what Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal described as “wide-ranging and productive talks” with his New Zealand counterpart, Christopher Luxon.

Key Areas of Cooperation

The discussions spanned trade and commerce, defence and security, among other areas. Jaiswal posted on X that both leaders decided to elevate ties to a strategic partnership. They also deliberated on the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement, and the meeting culminated in the exchange of several memorandums of understanding and cooperation arrangements in defence, further strengthening the dynamic partnership.

Defence and Maritime Cooperation

A joint statement issued after the talks revealed that the prime ministers agreed to maintain regular structured engagement at the Defense Ministry and service levels. They also committed to strengthening maritime cooperation, reflecting shared strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region.

Trade Goals and Middle East Concerns

The two nations agreed to work toward doubling two-way trade in goods and services by 2030. Additionally, the statement expressed concern about the “renewed escalation” of tensions in the Middle East, urging all parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate tensions, and ensure civilian protection. They called for full restoration of freedom of navigation and global commerce through the Strait of Hormuz, opposing any shipping constraints, and reiterated the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law for a peaceful resolution.
