Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Washington on Thursday as Pakistan and the United States began a new round of discussions focused on expanding bilateral trade and strengthening economic cooperation. The visit also comes as regional diplomatic efforts continue amid tensions involving the US and Iran.
Naqvi's Prior Engagement at UNCOPS 2026
Naqvi travelled to Washington after representing Pakistan at the Fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) in New York, where he took part in discussions on global security, international law enforcement cooperation and transnational crime. His visit is being closely followed as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement with regional and global partners while supporting efforts to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran after months of instability in the Middle East.
US-Iran Diplomatic Context
According to US officials, diplomatic communication with Iran remains ongoing despite the uncertain regional situation. Washington is continuing to prioritise negotiations while maintaining military readiness. Officials also dismissed reports claiming fresh US strikes on Iranian targets, although they acknowledged that the regional security environment remains fragile.
Bilateral Meeting with Bangladesh
During his stay in New York, Naqvi met Bangladesh's Interior Minister Salahuddin Ahmed. Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in tackling cybercrime, online fraud and other cross-border security threats. The ministers also discussed police training programmes and broader areas of bilateral collaboration.
The meeting also covered the latest developments in the Middle East, with the Bangladeshi minister appreciating Pakistan's efforts to promote regional peace. Naqvi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir had played an important role in supporting regional stability.
Other High-Level Meetings
On the sidelines of the UN summit, Naqvi also held separate meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and senior officials from China, Russia and Sri Lanka to discuss international security cooperation and Pakistan's contribution to global peace efforts.
