Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday extended greetings to the nation and the Muslim Ummah on the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1448 Hijri, expressing hope that the year would usher in peace, prosperity and stability across the world.
In a message issued on the advent of Muharram and the new Hijri year, the prime minister prayed for peace and well-being for humanity and called for the promotion of tolerance, harmony, peaceful coexistence and the protection of human life.
He said it was encouraging that the new Islamic year had begun with reports of a peaceful resolution of tensions involving Iran and the United States, adding that Pakistan had played a sincere role in promoting peace through dialogue and diplomacy. The prime minister said such efforts reflected the teachings of Islam and the example set by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who emphasised mutual understanding and peaceful engagement.
Referring to the significance of the Hijri calendar, Mr Sharif said the beginning of the new year served as a reminder of the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) migration (Hijrah), which laid the foundation for an exemplary Islamic society based on justice, equality, brotherhood and service to humanity.
He said the Hijrah offered enduring lessons in sacrifice, discipline, mutual trust and collective responsibility, adding that many of today’s challenges could be addressed by adhering to these principles.
Highlighting the importance of Muharram-ul-Haram, the prime minister paid tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions for their sacrifices in the Battle of Karbala, describing their stand against oppression as a lasting source of inspiration for Muslims around the world.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s support for oppressed communities, he called for continued solidarity with Muslims facing hardships, particularly in Palestine and Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and stressed the need to advocate for their rights.
PM Shehbaz also urged citizens to uphold the values of honesty, hard work, tolerance, mutual respect and national unity, and to contribute to the country’s development and prosperity. He concluded by praying for peace, blessings and prosperity for Pakistan, the Muslim world and the international community in the new Islamic year.
