United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday praised Pakistan's efforts to promote peace during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The two sides exchanged views on the regional situation and a range of international issues, with particular focus on Pakistan's mediation efforts aimed at ending conflicts in West Asia and its longstanding contributions to UN peacekeeping operations.
Pakistan's Role in Regional Stability
During the meeting, Guterres acknowledged Pakistan's invaluable role in UN peacekeeping missions, noting the country's consistent support for global peace initiatives. The UN chief appreciated Pakistan's responsible actions despite numerous challenges, according to a news release issued by Pakistan's mission to the UN.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan has acted responsibly to promote regional peace and stability and safeguard human lives. He emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to supporting UN-led peace efforts.
Mediation in West Asia
The discussions also highlighted Pakistan's mediation efforts in West Asia, where the country has been actively working to de-escalate tensions and facilitate dialogue. The UN Secretary-General commended Pakistan's proactive role in conflict resolution in the region.
Pakistan has a long history of contributing to UN peacekeeping operations, with over 200,000 troops having served in various missions worldwide. The country is one of the largest contributors of personnel to UN peacekeeping forces.
Commitment to Multilateralism
Naqvi reiterated Pakistan's commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations Charter, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges. He thanked the UN Secretary-General for his continued support for Pakistan's initiatives.
