Vance: Major Progress in Iran Talks, IAEA Inspections Agreed

US Vice President JD Vance announced on Monday that negotiations with Iran at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland have achieved significant progress, laying what he called a "very good foundation" for a final agreement. Speaking to reporters after talks involving US and Iranian officials, alongside mediators from Qatar and Pakistan, Vance described the previous day as "a very, very good day" with substantial advancements.

Key Objectives Achieved in Talks

Vance stated that the discussions accomplished several critical objectives, including establishing mechanisms to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and a deconfliction mechanism between Israel and Lebanon. The arrangement is designed to ensure that "when things happen, the sides are actually talking to one another," preventing tensions from escalating into a broader regional conflict.

Major Breakthrough on Nuclear File

Announcing what he termed a major breakthrough, Vance said, "The Iranians have agreed to invite IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) inspectors back into their country. That is a major milestone for the American people, and the first step in permanently denuclearizing or permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran." This marks a significant shift in Iran's stance on international oversight.

Framework for Continued Engagement

The vice president confirmed that negotiators from the US, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan have agreed on a framework for ongoing dialogue. "Our teams, working with the Iranians, the Qataris, and the Pakistanis, made great progress yesterday," he said. "They will continue to work at the technical level with the teams here in Burgenstock. Those technical negotiations are going to continue over the weeks and days to come."

Foundation for Final Deal

Vance emphasized that the talks established a structure allowing technical discussions to proceed under political oversight as negotiators work toward a comprehensive agreement. He likened the process to building a house: "We laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal. The final deal is the house. We set the foundation. We haven't built the house, but we've laid a successful foundation." He dismissed concerns that the talks had been derailed, noting that negotiations continued "well past 1 in the morning" despite reports that Iran might leave the talks.

Iranian Oil Exports Surge

In a related development, ship-tracking platform TankerTrackers reported that Iran has exported 36 million barrels of crude oil since a memorandum of understanding with the US was announced. "Iran has exported 36 million barrels of crude oil since 2026-06-15. There is roughly an equal amount still afloat in Iran," it wrote on X. The memorandum, reached on June 14 through Pakistani mediation, aimed to end the war and resolve disputes through dialogue. It entered into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump. Its provisions include ending hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade imposed on Iran.
