President Asif Ali Zardari will undertake an official visit to Kyrgyzstan from July 6 to 9, 2026, marking the first visit by a Pakistani president in two decades. The trip, at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Nurgozhoevich Zhaparov, aims to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation across multiple sectors. Former President Pervez Musharraf was the last Pakistani president to visit Kyrgyzstan, traveling to Bishkek in March 2005.
Delegation-Level Talks and Bilateral Agenda
During the four-day visit, President Zardari is scheduled to hold delegation-level talks and a one-on-one meeting with President Zhaparov. The two leaders are expected to review the full spectrum of Pakistan-Kyrgyzstan relations and exchange views on regional and international developments. Key areas of focus include expanding cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity, energy, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. The visit is expected to provide fresh impetus to bilateral engagement and reinforce the longstanding friendship between the two countries, according to diplomatic sources.
Meetings with Kyrgyz Leadership
As part of the official programme, President Zardari will also receive separate calls from Chairman of the Cabinet (Prime Minister) Adylbek Kasymaliev and Speaker of the Kyrgyz Supreme Council (parliament) Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu. These meetings will focus on strengthening parliamentary cooperation, enhancing economic collaboration, and exploring new avenues for mutually beneficial partnerships.
Historical and Regional Context
Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan enjoy warm and cordial relations based on shared historical, cultural, and religious ties. Both countries are members of regional organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and have been working closely to promote regional peace, connectivity, and economic integration. President Zardari’s visit is expected to reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to deepening engagement with Central Asian states and advancing cooperation under Pakistan’s broader regional connectivity and economic diplomacy agenda. Notably, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Nurgozhoevich Zhaparov had visited Pakistan from December 3-4, 2025.
Expected Outcomes and Significance
The visit underscores the importance both nations place on enhancing bilateral ties after a long gap in high-level exchanges. It is anticipated to result in new agreements or memorandums of understanding in areas such as trade, energy, and education, further solidifying the partnership. The timing also aligns with Pakistan’s strategic focus on Central Asia as part of its vision for regional connectivity and economic growth.
